Design for Emotion with Mindsets Illustration

Emotions and mindsets are complex and difficult subjects. So when Róisín Bowden, a UX Researcher at Workday asked me to develop the graphics to visually communicate her article Design for Emotion with Mindsets I took an unorthodox approach.

My choice to present my graphics as needlepoint characters stemmed from my own emotional coping method during the COVID lockdowns of sewing as a distraction and to relax my mind.  I believed it made the images more comforting and friendly in discussing a difficult topic during an equally difficult time

The concept was a hit with the team and I went on to recreate the characters and elements as hand-sewn needlepoint pieces. I then converted the pieces into graphics and presented the designs on a fabric background.

One can easily imagine the sewn characters coming to life on the fabric in a stop-motion piece… Well, maybe next time!
